FROM RIO GALLEGOS: From the Bus Terminal of Río Gallegos there are regular buses with frequencies every 6 hours and with a trip duration of 3 – 4 hours depending on the season.

FROM THE SOUTH OF CHILE: From Puerto Natales, there are regular buses that arrive at the El Calafate Bus Terminal in approximately five hours depending on customs procedures and season.

By car

FROM BUENOS AIRES TO THE COAST: You can choose between any of the routes that take you to Bahía Blanca or Río Colorado, to continue from there to San Antonio Oeste, from where you will only have the option to continue on National Route N ° 3. From this point, you will begin to enjoy the typical landscape of the Patagonian steppe, and if you are a good observer, you can enjoy the blue sea, and the patagonic fauna like guanacos, sheep, choiques, piches, hares and foxes, which are usually see crossing or along the road. Continuing the journey, you will pass through the following points of interest: Sierra Grande (where you can make an excursion to the interior of a copper mine), Valdes Peninsula (all year round it will offer you fabulous austral franca whale shows), Puerto Madryn ( we recommend the beach on sunny days ), and if you can go as far as Camarones, you will be able to see lots of penguins,Comodoro Rivadavia (another beach you can not miss is Rada Tilly, 15 km from Comodoro), Caleta Olivia, If you are encouraged to drive 50 km, you can not miss the National Monument Petrified Forests Puerto San Julián (with an attractive coastal road with fossil remains), Piedra Buena (it is worth visiting the Pavón Island to learn more about our history), and from here you have 2 options.

First option is to take Route 9 which is a gravel road making a shortcut directly to El Calafate. It is recommended to travel cautiously.

Second option is to continue driving on the asphalted Route 3 bordering the Patagonian coast passing through the National Park Monte Leon until Rios Gallegos City. Then take the Route 5 to connect with route 40 to reach el Calafate City.

FROM THE SOUTH OF CHILE: You can access El Calafate coming from the south of Chile, either through Río Gallegos, if you took route 255, crossing the Paso de Integración Austral. Or if you chose Route 9, you can cross the border in Puerto Natales, leaving Río Turbio on the Argentine side (and take advantage of knowing the area of the coal basin), or crossing Cerro Castillo, leaving to Cancha Carrera. In both cases, continue on Route Prov. 7, fully paved, until Esperanza, then continue along Route Prov. 5 until you reach Route Prov. 11.
